Torres finished with three goals and an assist despite being level with Gomez, he was awarded the prize having played fewer minutes than his German counterpart which is the tiebreak rule set by the ruling body UEFA. The Chelsea striker Torres scored Spain's third goal with a calm finish before assisting his Chelsea team-mate Juan Mata in the 88th min. for their fourth goal. He earlier scored two goals against  Republic of Ireland in the group stage making his tally three. Torres succeed injured team mate David Villa, who was top scorer at Euro 2008 with four goals.
