UEFA has confirmed that a new seeding system for club group leaders will be used next season which will see the champions of the seven biggest leagues in Europe with the winner of Champions League as top seeds of each group.
This means if Chelsea finally becomes title winners of the Premier League, they will be among the eight top seeds in the Champions League draw in August.
The Blues are now 10 points clear in the Premier League race with one outstanding match as they meet Arsenal this weekend, if they win Arsenal and Leicester city, they win be crown the champions of EPL.
So if the Champions League winner also wins their domestic league title, then the champions of the eight-ranked association Holland which is likely to be PSV Eindhoven would be named as top seeds.
The UEFA’s new Champions League regulations which was published on their website states that “The first group comprises the title holders (top seed) and the domestic champions of the seven top-ranked associations in accordance with the access list” “If the title holder is one of the top seven associations domestic champions, the group is completed with the champions of the association ranked eight” UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino said:
“Football is about winning, it’s about competition, it’s about sporting merit. I think it’s kind of natural thing to give to those who have won a competition a special treatment like this.”
