Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has called on his team players to replicate their perfect performance last season Champions League in today's clash with Shakhtar Donetsk. The Blues are currently in a precarious position in Group E and would need nothing less than a win against the Ukrainian champions in other to keep their chances of advancing to the next stage alive.
Today's encounter at Stamford Bridge according to the Italian manager, is the club's biggest since last season's final, which they won. So the manager urge his side to display similar spirit and get all three points against the eastern Europeans to keep their hope alive: "There are some comparisons certainly to last season, when we had must-win games.
Tomorrow is another like that." He said yesterday. "Fortunately, we have players with the experience who have been through that before. "We have to play the perfect game tomorrow to beat Shakhtar, but we're strong at home. We've shown that over many years, and we'll be fired up for this game to win it." Chelsea lost in Donetsk two weeks ago as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat. Last Champions League campaign, it was Di Matteo who guided the club he once played for to Champions League victory after taking over from Andre Villas-Boas.
When it looked like Chelsea had already lost their chance to progress through the knockout stages against Napoli, they made a stunning victory to overturn their goal deficit to win. They also defeated Benfica, Valencia and Barcelona to meet Bayern Munich in the finals which they eventually won to emerge the Champions of Europe. If the players can display the same winning spirit in today's game too, then i can see the Blues winning this one too.
