John Obi Mikel Delighted to Sign new Chelsea Contract

Chelsea defensive mid-fielder John Obi Mikel has express his happiness after signing a new contract with Chelsea. The club has announced that the 25 year-old Nigerian is willing to stay at Stamford Bridge until 2017.

Mikel moved to Chelsea back in 2006, as a 19 year-old player from Norwegian out-fit Lyn Oslo. He started his football career as an attacking mid-fielder but was converted to a defensive minded player by Jose Mourinho who was then in charge of Chelsea. Mikel Obi has made 261 appearances for the Blues and taken part in some of the side's most memorable moments of recent times, but held only few goals to his credit which has attracted so many criticism from fans and the media.

But be that as it may, he is delighted to be part of Chelsea's future plans. "Chelsea seems like my home now because I have been here for over six years and I enjoy my time here. I come into the training ground every day to work and I value my time there. I am happy and want to keep going and win trophies for this club", Mikel told the club's official site.

"I have basically won everything with Chelsea and those years have been really special for me, winning trophies with big names like Didier Drogba, John Terry and Frank Lampard who have had very long Chelsea careers. "Last season to win the Champions League was even more special and I hope these next five years will bring even more success and I can win trophies with the new players we have here."

Mikel also feels that there is even more to come from him, with his peak as a player just starting to be hit, along with his continuing to have a real willingness to grow further. "Being 25 I think I am now hitting my peak but as a player you want to improve every day and there is still room for that. I want to learn from the players and the manager and I just want to keep going."

Mikel did not play in Chelsea's Champions League victory over FC Nordsjaelland last night and will aim to celebrate his new contract against Sunderland at the weekend in Premier League action.
