Torres had scored just 19 goals for the club in 22 months since his £50m move from Liverpool. He has scored just once, in his last eight appearances for the club. A lucky rebound against Shakhtar Donetsk, and was left on the bench by Di Matteo for the 3-0 defeat at Juventus.
Despite the poor form of Fernando Torres, Rafa Benitez was the first to admit that he is no problem to him. "You don't need too much time talking with Fernando," said Benitez, who signed Torres from Atletico Madrid in 2007. "I know him and he knows me and what we're looking for. I have to spend more time with the others. "Fernando is easy. I say to him, 'You have to do this' and he says, 'Okay'."
At his days at Liverpool, Torres scored 56 goals in 79 games under the management of Benitez. So does this means he will revive his goal scoring form now that they work together again?
Abramovich obviously want his club built around his £50m investment, and the 28 year-old will no doubt look to start tomorrow's match against Manchester city. But Benitez revealed his former player then at Liverpool would be treated the same as everybody else at Stamford Bridge. He stressed: "I talk to the young players, the senior players, I train with the wingers and the midfielders trying to improve them. Fernando will be the same."
When ask if he would have the chance of replacing Torres with Daniel Sturridge for the central striking role, Benitez added: "If I need to change things, I will." Asked who he would pick on form alone, he would only say: "I have seen a player with commitment, with ideas to improve."
When pressed whether Abramovich would give him complete freedom to pick who he wants. He said: "Twenty-six years in charge and I can guarantee I've had a lot of different owners, presidents and chairmen. "My impression with him is he's a nice person. You can talk with him."
