Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has
empathize with Mikel Obi over his treatment by the media and fans. The manager
says, Mikel’s value is never recognized by the media including the fans of
the club which is so unfair not proper, saying the Nigerian midfielder is one of
the club’s unsung heroes despite his poor rating.
Mikel occupies a role in front of the defence and got
only few chances to move forward that is why he is yet to record his first
premier league goal after making 135 appearances for the club. Despite
his goal drought at
Chelsea, he recently scored a rare goal for his home country as Nigeria rout Liberia 6-1 to qualify for the African nations cup finals in South Africa.

“Over the years he
has been almost ever-present,” Di Matteo told the club’s website on Monday. “He
was very important at the back end of last season and this season he has
started in good form. We all make mistakes in games and I don’t think he gets
the credit for the work he does for the team”
Earlier this month, the manager
comment on the unnoticed role of his defensive midfielder and said: "I don’t
know why Mikel is underrated by the media or the fans. He is very rated by us
in the group and it’s a position where you are a bit of an unsung hero."
“You do
the dirty work which is not recognized all the time because the goal scorers
and more creative players get the recognition. But he is very important for our
team.”
Meanwhile, Mikel has made a promise after his goal for Super Eagles, to improve on his lack of goals for the club. Chelsea now sit four points on top of the league table with difficult games ahead. First they travel to White Hart Lane to play against London rivals Spurs before visiting the Ukraine side Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League next week. Chelsea then have a back-to-back home game against Manchester United in the Premier League and League cup respectively.
