Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi is on the brink of signing a new five year contract extension with the club very soon. The Nigerian international who arrived West London from Norwegian outfit Lyn Oslo in 2006 is now in the final year of his contract but according to his agent John Shittu, the club is working out a new deal to keep the consistent defensive midfielder at Stamford Bridge till 2017.
According to the player's agent, Mikel 25, will also get a pay-rise in his new contract deal with the club. "Mikel will soon sign a new five-year contract with an improved salary and we are just about finalizing the details of it," Shittu told The Sun. "Mikel is one of Chelsea's most consistent performers and the club agrees with us he deserves a new and improved contract. "He has a year left and Chelsea have decided to add four more years to it."
Mikel's effectiveness and success at the club was seen during the Champions League glory last season where his role was superb against Bayern Munich but since then, the 25-years-old Nigerian has not really given his best in the first team. During Andre Villas-Boas reign at Chelsea, he played a largely marginalized role in the first two-thirds of last season, before Di Matteo steps in to restore him as an effective component of his team midfield.
