Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta spoke on Fernando Torres criticism saying the striker is treated unfairly. The Spanish midfielder has expressed his anger towards Torres critics and the pressure heaped on his shoulders since his move to Stamford Bridge.
Torres has failed to justify his £50 million mega price when he moved from Liverpool to Chelsea in January 2011. And as a result, he has heavily been criticized by most Chelsea for coaches, Chelsea legends, and in the media. Which has let the striker's confidence drain away.
But despite his bad form and critics, Fernando Torres has endured a turbulent time at Chelsea on the pitch. At the beginning of this season, he made a promise to step in Drogba's shoes and improve his game and we are yet to see his promise come to pass.
Early this week, El Nino's performances has been encouraging having 2 goals this season already, he also scored in the Capital One Cup 6-0 win against Wolves. Hence, Arteta has publicly back his countryman and childhood friend saying: "I don't like the way he has been treated because I have known him since we were 16, 17 and I really appreciate him," He told Arsenal's official website ahead of the game with Chelsea on Saturday.
"He is a friend of mine. Obviously, football is like that - it doesn't matter what you have done in the past, it is only what you have done in the last few weeks. "He has been criticized. Mentally he is a really strong guy even if someone doubts him. When you play as a striker and they pay £50 million for you, you are under huge pressure. "When the ball isn't going in the net, it is even more difficult because people always look at that. For a striker, sometimes it is not fair. For a midfielder or a defender it is a bit easier to adapt."
Yes Arteta you were right, Torres is better than what we see him to be now. The idea of buying strikers with huge amount of money is not the best, it only kills the player's morale as he thinks he has the duty to win matches for the club and when its not so, people criticize. It happens to Pizzaro and Shevcheko too.
